About ROP
*ROP classes are open to high school students, 16 years of age or older, and adults. Priority is given to highschool students seniors and juniors.
*Credits earned in ROP classes are based on actual attendance.
*All classes recieve either elective or practical art credit. Check with your counselor to see if the ROP elective class can recieve fine art or science credit.
 
WHAT IS ROP?
The Regional Occupational Program (ROP) is a public educational service that provides practical hands-on job training & career guidance to students in the Santa Clarita Valley who are 16 years of age or older. 11th & 12th grade High School students, out-of-school youth & adults may enroll in ROP for any of the following reasons:
· To learn entry-level employment skills
· To Premark for career advancement by upgrading existing job skills
· Prepare for advance training programs (offered at College of the Canyons)
· Retrain for a new career
 
WHY ENROLL IN ROP?
Students who successfully complete an ROP course can obtain:
· High School credit towards graduation
· Job Skills needed for full & part-time employment
· Certificates of Achievement (skills & competencies listed on back of certificate)
· Paid & unpaid on-the-job training (available in many classes)
· Instruction on how to find & keep a job
· Curriculum planned with assistance of local employers
In addition, many college students use their ROP training to gain schoolwork experience in their chosen career field. Income earned helps pay college tuition & fees!
 
HOW TO ENROLL IN ROP
Eligible students may enroll in a wide variety of courses by contacting the ROP Advisor at any local high school or by calling (661) 259-0033, Ext. 234 for details.
 
WHEN DO CLASSES START AND WHOM DO I CONTACT?
Most ROP classes start at the beginning of each regular school semester. Some courses offer continuous "open" enrollment, which allows students to enter the course at anytime throughout the school year. Summer courses are also available.

WHAT IS THE COST?
ROP is funded by the State Department of Education and is therefore TUITION FREE. Some courses may require a lab/materials fee or the purchase of a uniform. Check course description for applicable fees. There is a non-refundable registration fee of $35.00 per class/per semester for adults.
 
CLASSROOM SETTINGS
ROP classes are offered throughout the Santa Clarita Valley at local high schools or at local business/industry sites. The classes may be conducted as classroom only, community classroom training, or cooperative vocational education courses.
CLASSROOM ONLY - Instruction takes place in a classroom setting with hands-on skills training using industry standard equipment.
COMMUNITY CLASSROOM SETTING - A combination of classroom instruction & unpaid on-the-job training at business & public agency sites.
COOPERATIVE VOCATIONAL EDUCATION (CVE) - A combination of classroom instruction and paid on-the-job training. Students must attend related classroom instruction & a minimum of 3 hours per week throughout the course.
 
TRANSPORTATION
In most cases, students are required to provide their own transportation to ROP classes. Local bus coupons are available free for students needing assistance.
